Our contributions to the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity

Demands for abundant, affordable and high quality food, as well as demands for non-food crops, are increasing. Biodiversity and agro-ecosystems are the production basis for these outputs and for food security in general. Other essential products and services provided by biodiversity include clean air and water, carbon storage, maintenance of genetic resources, pollination and climate regulation, as well as protection from floods and droughts.

Integrating biodiversity conservation into our R&D activities is a self-evident obligation and we are continuously pushing the science further to understand better the interrelationship of ecosystems with our technologies.

Bayer CropScience is committed to conserving and enhancing biodiversity, as a key component of sustainable development in agriculture, by:
  • Integrating biodiversity conservation objectives into our research and development (R&D) activities.
  • Promoting scientific cooperation and information-sharing to increase awareness among policy-makers and stakeholders.
  • Providing innovative technologies, precision tools, and approaches that enable the efficient management of natural resources or spare their use.
  • Promoting the management of agro-ecosystems via Integrated Crop Management (ICM) - a holistic concept that balances the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability and sets a framework of good agricultural practices that includes conservation and enhancement of biodiversity.
  • Providing solutions for the management of invasive alien species (IAS).
  • Supporting the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to conserve biodiversity, ensure its sustainable use and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the use of genetic resources.
In addition, we pursue initiatives for sustainable production patterns at our manufacturing sites, which include saving water, energy, raw materials and fuel and reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and waste-water discharges. We also manage corporate land responsibly by integrating biodiversity considerations.

Our technologies enable both small and large-scale farmers to increase productivity on land already being cropped. This avoids conversion of natural habitats onto marginal land which in most cases are not suited for agricultural production.
